In this race Lasse Viren set the new world record for the 10,000m (27:38.4). David Bedford (GB, 274) was also among the leaders

Yifter was also scheduled to participate in the 5,000m race, but apparently he missed the starting line and DNS.
That was taken in Ethiopia as a major offense, and for that reason he was in jail for a short period of time.
